I remember my draft day — it was an awesome moment! We were all gathered at my sister’s home in California for a BBQ. My coaches at Michigan State thought I would be drafted in the 5th or 6th round. It was the 4th round and the phone rang. On the other end was the Bengals’ Defensive Coordinator, “Do you want to be a Bengal?” Of course I said, “Yes!” Then he handed the telephone over to Head Coach Lewis and we spoke for a few minutes. After I got off the phone my family gathered in a circle, held hands and gave thanks to God for His blessing. A few minutes later, we saw the ticker scroll on the tv with my name on it. The phone rang non-stop the rest of the day as family and friends called to congratulate me.
For all the college athletes going through this year’s NFL Draft, I would like to share a veteran’s perspective. It doesn’t matter what round you are picked-in. When you put your hand in the dirt, no one says … or cares … what round you were drafted in. Just get out there and do your best!
